About this item
- The Kuru Toga Series from Uni-ball Mitsubishi has a core rotation mechanism that can automatically rotate the pencil lead as you write. The lead is twisted through a spring-loaded clutch, it works by twisting incrementally every time you lift the pencil up (i.e. during printing words, etc.). This allows a uniform wearing of the pencil lead so that it always remains as a pointed tip. So you can easily avoid the usual problem of using pencils:
- At first the pencil has a sharp point, but after that when you continue to write the point is worn down, and your line widths are smudgy and thicker. Sometimes the tip of the angled point can scratch or catch on the paper. The lead is easy to break due to some positions of the tip and the angles of the tip.
- But using Kuru Toga pencil, you will not have to face the above problems. You are effectively using only 50% of the lead area that you were previously using with your old mechanical pencil. Thus, a 0.3/0.5 mm Kuru Toga will write incredibly thin lines and have less breakage than a standard 0.3/0.5 mm mechanical pencil.

Product Description
Enjoy the second generation Kuru Toga pencil with an aluminum grip and high-quality plastic body. This pencil is perfect for stationery fanatics, it will always give you a sharp point! Ideal for writing crisp and neat print, using with Sudoku puzzles and more! It's going to take a true pencil expert to understand the common pencil's dilemma but hang in there as we try and explain. With standard mechanical pencils, as you write the pencil lead is worn down until it is a slanted surface. Each time you write you will get a different experience depending on how the pencil is rotated. This can cause multiple annoyances: 1. As you start to write you might have a sharp point, but as you continue to write the point is worn down and thus your line widths are not uniform. This can also lead to smudgy and thick lines. 2. If you pick the pencil up and happen to start writing with the tip of the angled point, it is likely to scratch or catch on the paper. 3. The different angles at which the pencil lead comes in to contact with the paper is a common cause of lead breakage. The Kuru Toga, on the other hand, has a core rotation mechanism that continually rotates the pencil lead as you write. The lead is twisted through a spring-loaded clutch, it works by twisting incrementally every time you lift the pencil up (i.e. during printing words, etc.). This allows a uniform wearing of the pencil lead so that it always remains as a pointed tip. Not only does it solve the above problems, but it also gives you an amazingly thin line. You are effectively using only 50% of the lead area that you were previously using with your old mechanical pencil. Thus, a 0.3/0.5 mm Kuru Toga will write incredibly thin lines and have less breakage than a standard 0.3/0.5 mm mechanical pencil.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 24, 2021Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1)Verified PurchaseFirst things first, 0.3mm lead is awesome! I love the fine point soo much! I can write so tiny! But the main feature, the lead rotation mechanism, is just MWAH. so good. I love how sharp it makes my letters look, even with the 0.3mm lead it is even better! The only complaint is the typical tiny almost microscopic eraser. I mean, really, it's 2020 why can't we get better erasing solutions? But beside that, it's pretty comfortable, I enjoy writing with it. I like the knurled grips better but those only come in 0.5mm that I've found. Even so, it's sleek and nice looking and comfy. Those discreet rubber rings really make a difference, give you fingers something to grip on. very nice!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2018Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1)Verified PurchaseTo preface this, I have the blue 0.3 version that I bought a few months ago from a different site, so I have a point of reference for comparison and I received the black one instead of the blue one that I ordered, which I didn't really mind since it's just color, but does not come in 0.3 size like the blue version does if you want 0.3 instead of 0.5.
Anyway, this is the review of the black version of the Kuru Toga.
I wanted another of my favorite mechanical pencil at work, so I decided to get it through Amazon this time around.
As a mechanical pencil, it writes very well; the grip is smooth and there's a small ring of silicone that kind of looks like a tiny gasket near the end of the barrel that I tend to like to grip (you can see this in the pictures I included, especially on my blue version that I already own), and it has a nice weight to it that made writing with it feel great.
The lead came out with no issues, and the mechanism that this pencil is known for does indeed turn the lead each time you lift the pencil so the point stayed sharp and I wish these are easier to find in the US.
There is one issue that I found with the black version and that is the barrel of the pencil felt cheaper than the blue version that I previously bought and have used for the last half year. It's not that it's not sturdy, it feels like a different type of aluminum was used compared to the pencil I already own. It's not a deal breaker for me, but I was mystified and thrown off guard by the difference; it felt a little cheaper aluminum in comparison to my other pencil.
All in all, the pencil is a really good pencil and still is my absolute favorite, even if I was sent the wrong one. I ended up gifting it to my little sister since I don't have any 0.5 lead for when the pencil runs out of the provided lead, and I don't plan to get any 0.5 lead just for this pencil. I also wanted to see if she'll like it as much as I do.
(Four stars because of the aluminum difference, but I still liked the pencil as it is.)

Images in this review - Reviewed in the United States on July 3, 2023Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1)Verified PurchaseThese pencils are excellent and work exactly as advertised. They come with highly effective erasers. Really, the erasers leave your paper spotless. And your lines will be very consistently a nice fine .3mm, every line, every time. Even though these pencils aren't cheap, I've bought three more since the first one I tried and my preferred brand of mechanical pencil has changed to these. My handwriting is very small and a bit sloppy and these make it slightly easier to produce legible characters and recognizable drawings.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 22, 2023Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1)Verified PurchaseBetter than the plastic body Kuru Togas. No issues so far. This one has a metal body making it a little heavier than the plastic body ones. But it’s balanced and the weight makes it feel like it’s a better quality writing tool.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2024Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1)Verified Purchasei like to collect and use technical pens. while this kind of has that look and feel, i wouldnt classify it as such. this is more of a writing pen. i would probably STILL give it 4 stars as a technical pen, but for a writing pen, these are great. punching well above their weight, i have pencils that ive paid much more money for that these are comparable to. not my goto daily writer, but knowing what i know now, id feel naked if these were not in my collection. 10/10.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2018Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1)Verified PurchaseI use this pencil more than any other now. For drawing, writing, anything else you need it for?
Pros:
Durable, its been dropped, stepped on, thrown, etc. and it works fine.
Smooth writing, the mechanism works well, though not perfectly. sometimes you have to help it a bit.
Cons:
Small eraser, for this you'll either want more backup erasers, or a large eraser.
The rubber bits wear off over time, This is probably due to me messing with them, but they probably wont last more than 2 years or so.
